Sitting at the top of our lineup above Epos 1.3 and Haiku H2, Epos 2 represents a major leap forward for small language models. At 1.5 billion parameters, it steps beyond the sub-1B constraints of previous releases to deliver dramatically richer dialog, stronger reasoning, and vastly improved problem-solving.

Epos 2 was trained from the ground up on a purpose-built corpus filled with long-form dialog, multi-step reasoning traces, and a rich multi-domain instruction mix. It offers a more engaging conversational flow while retaining Rootcomputer’s signature grounded, direct answering style.

Smarter Reasoning & Reading Comprehension

Epos 2 zeroes in on the exact areas where small models typically struggle:

  • Arithmetic (+16.6% jump): Tackles multi-step math and calculation logic with greater reliability.
  • Science (+20% gain): Reaches a perfect 100% on benchmark science evaluations.
  • Reading & Language: Sharper comprehension, context retention, and vocabulary depth.

Top-of-the-Line Performance: Featherweight v2

Epos 2 leads the pack on our Featherweight v2 benchmark with an impressive 92.0% overall score (+5.3 points over Epos 1.3), achieving near-ceiling or perfect scores across Categorization, Common Sense, History, Geography, Science, and Vocabulary.

Under the Hood: Built to Evolve

  • Status: Open Beta (Closed-weight research model).
  • Training Stage: Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT) baseline. Epos 2 is built to showcase what’s possible with an optimized dataset, with Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) currently in development for future iterations.
  • Role in Lineup: Epos 2 doesn't replace our lightweight reference models (Haiku H2 and Epos 1.3)—it complements them as the high-capability powerhouse at the top of the range.
